Florida Memorial University Partners With Bahamas Ministry of Education to Expand Graduate Education Opportunities

The agreement establishes a pathway for Bahamian educators to pursue a master’s degree in Exceptional Student Education.

Florida Memorial University (FMU) is partnering with the Commonwealth of The Bahamas Ministry of Education to expand graduate education opportunities for educators across the Caribbean.

The Miami Gardens-based historically Black university signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the ministry on Oct. 30, establishing a Professional Education Pathway for qualified Bahamian educators and education professionals to pursue a Master of Science in Exceptional Student Education.

The partnership aims to strengthen educator preparation while expanding access to specialized training for professionals who work with students with disabilities and diverse learning needs.

Through the program, participating educators will have the opportunity to develop skills in inclusive instructional practices, specialized learning strategies, individualized educational planning and evidence-based interventions.

The agreement comes as schools continue to emphasize the importance of having educators equipped to address the different academic and developmental needs of students.

Expanding Access to Specialized Educator Training

The graduate pathway is designed to help strengthen the educator workforce in The Bahamas by providing advanced academic preparation in exceptional student education.

Areas of study include creating inclusive learning environments, developing individualized student support plans, conducting assessments and working alongside families, schools and multidisciplinary professionals.

The program will also address leadership and advocacy in exceptional student education, giving participating educators additional tools to support students with diverse learning needs.

According to the university, the collaboration reflects a shared commitment to professional development and improving educational services for students throughout The Bahamas.

Florida Memorial University President William C. McCormick Jr. has emphasized the importance of international partnerships in extending the university’s educational mission beyond traditional geographic boundaries.

The agreement also builds on FMU’s broader commitment to graduate education, workforce development and academic collaboration throughout the Caribbean and internationally.

Building an International Education Partnership

Beyond the immediate graduate education pathway, the MOU creates an opportunity for FMU and the Bahamas Ministry of Education to explore additional areas of academic cooperation and professional development.

The collaboration is expected to support the professional growth of Bahamian educators while contributing to the ministry’s broader educational development priorities.

For Florida Memorial University, the partnership further establishes its role in connecting educational opportunities across South Florida and the Caribbean.

As the two institutions move forward with the initiative, the agreement represents a shared investment in preparing educators to better serve students, families and communities.
