Broward Animal Care Joins Statewide Push to Find Homes for Shelter Pets at Mega Adoption Event

Animal shelters across Florida are facing growing overcrowding as more dogs enter shelters than leave through adoption. To help address the issue, Broward County Animal Care and Broward County Parks and Recreation are partnering with several South Florida animal welfare organizations for the Petco Love Florida MEGA Adoption Event on June 20.

The free event will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at T.Y. Park and is part of a statewide campaign aimed at placing 2,000 dogs and cats into permanent homes.

Participating organizations, including Broward County Animal Care, Miami-Dade County Animal Services, Humane Society of Broward County and Humane Society of Greater Miami, will have adoptable pets on site and will waive adoption fees during the event. Pet registration fees and the park’s regular weekend gate admission fee will still apply.

According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, nearly 73 percent of government-operated shelters report an increase in dogs entering their facilities, creating capacity challenges for shelters nationwide.

“Animal shelters, including Broward County Animal Care, are under tremendous pressure as more pets enter our care than leave through adoption,” Broward County Animal Care Director Doug Brightwell said in a statement. “Every adoption creates space for another pet in need and helps us move closer to ending shelter overcrowding.”

Organizers hope the event will not only connect pets with families but also raise awareness about the ongoing shelter overpopulation crisis.

Broward County Parks and Recreation Director Dan West said parks and pets can both contribute to healthier communities by encouraging outdoor activity, reducing stress and creating opportunities for social interaction. He encouraged new pet owners to take advantage of Broward’s dog-friendly parks, including the leash-free areas at Markham Park and Quiet Waters Park.
