Jamaican Star Buju Banton Endorses Former U.S. Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick

Former U.S. Representative Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick received a massive visible campaign boost during a June 6 concert in Tamarac, Florida. Performing in front of an estimated 14,000 fans, Buju Banton paused his set to publicly thank Cherfilus-McCormick for her past advocacy, which he credited with helping him navigate hurdles to perform in the United States. The performance marked a rare and highly anticipated U.S. appearance for Banton, whose career has faced long-standing domestic legal and visa constraints following a 2011 federal drug conviction.

“There’s one more person I’d like to thank, and that’s Congresswoman Sheila McCormick, who fought the good fight (so) that Buju Banton could be here today,” Banton told the crowd as detailed in an Instagram video. “I want you to remember her when you go out to support. Please remember those who fought for us. We must fight for them.”

Hy-Lo News has reported that Cherfilus-McCormick resigned from Congress in April amid a House ethics probe, and faces federal charges in Miami for allegedly stealing more than $5 million in FEMA COVID-19 relief funds and using the money to finance her previous campaign. She has maintained her innocence, framing her re-election bid as a fight against politically motivated attacks.

Cherfilus-McCormick shared a video of the concert and endorsement on Instagram, writing: “They tried to bury me with false accusations, but what they forgot is this: real work leaves real impact. The love, the support, and the fight from this community are undeniable because the results are undeniable. Pressure creates diamonds, not defeat. Together we rise.”

Political analysts note that securing an explicit endorsement from a cultural titan of Banton’s stature represents a calculated strategic play. Florida’s 20th Congressional District—which spans dense pockets of Broward and Palm Beach counties—features a highly concentrated population of Jamaican-American, Haitian-American, and African American voters.

Within an electorate deeply rooted in the Caribbean diaspora, campaign strategists argue that tangible advocacy on behalf of cultural icons can serve as a powerful tool to shift voter focus away from federal legal controversies and back to community-level impact, according to regional insights from Miramar News.

Ultimately, Cherfilus-McCormick is betting that her history of direct delivery for the diaspora will outweigh the shadow of her impending legal battle.

When stepping down from her seat in the spring, she fiercely blasted the investigations to the 19th News, stating, “I will not stand by and pretend that this has been anything other than a witch hunt. I simply cannot stand by and allow my due process rights to be trampled on.”
