Six Miami-Dade County public schools are being recognized through Florida Power & Light Company’s STEM Classroom Makeover Grant program, with some already benefiting from upgraded learning spaces and others preparing to transform their classrooms for the upcoming school year.
The initiative, now in its fifth year, provides funding for technology, equipment and resources designed to strengthen science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education. The grants are awarded through a partnership between FPL, The Education Fund and Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
At a recent celebration, participating schools showcased how they used their grant funding or shared plans for upcoming classroom enhancements. Investments have included updated technology, robotics kits, STEM software, desks and other tools intended to create more engaging learning environments.
“Our students are so excited,” said Edwin Stajkovic, robotics teacher at Orchard Villa Elementary School, in a statement to the press. “There is a noticeable sense of excitement throughout the school each morning, as students inquire about robotics activities and opportunities to visit the STEM lab. This initiative has significantly enhanced our learning environment and fostered greater enthusiasm for education.”
In a press statement, Lourdes Diaz, chief academic officer for Miami-Dade County Public Schools, said the grants help create spaces that encourage innovation and collaboration.
“These STEM Classroom Makeover Grants represent far more than a classroom transformation. They are an investment in opportunity, innovation, and student potential,” Diaz said. “Through our continued partnership with Florida Power & Light and The Education Fund, our educators can create learning environments that spark curiosity, promote collaboration, and inspire students to see themselves as future problem solvers, engineers, and leaders.”
The schools recognized through the program include:
- Miami Norland Senior High School (2024-25 grant winner)
- Howard D. McMillian Middle School (2024-25 grant winner)
- Hialeah Middle School (2024-25 grant winner)
- Orchard Villa Elementary School (2024-25 grant winner)
- Aventura Waterways K-8 Center (2025-26 grant winner)
- Robert Morgan Educational Center and Technical College (2025-26 grant winner)
“We firmly believe in the power of education and the difference it can make in the lives of our youth,” said Kate Cotner, FPL director of community engagement, in a press statement. “We are thrilled to be a part of creating a dynamic learning atmosphere for students across Florida and Miami-Dade County.”
According to FPL, the STEM Classroom Makeover Grant program is designed to expand student exposure to STEM education and career pathways by providing schools with technology and resources that support hands-on learning experiences.
