‘Black Representation is Non-Negotiable’: Sen. Shevrin Jones Sounds Alarm on Florida’s Black Political Power as Wasserman Schultz Enters District 20 Race

Veteran U.S. Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz announced her intention to run in Florida’s 20th Congressional District. As reported by Hy-Lo News, the seat became vacant following the sudden resignation of former Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick. Under a contentious congressional map pushed through by Republican Governor Ron DeSantis, Wasserman Schultz’s previous district was dismantled, prompting her to claim CD-20—a historically Black access seat where Florida Politics cites roughly 42% of the voting-age population is Black.

The decision has drawn a swift, unified response from Broward and Miami-Dade County’s Black Democratic base, community activists, and the Florida Legislative Black Caucus. Among the most prominent voices leading the charge is Florida State Senator Shevrin Jones (D-Miami Gardens), the Senate Democratic Leader. Recently, Sen. Shevrin Jones, who represents District 34 in Miami-Dade, announced on social media that he will not seek re-election to the state legislature, which has fueled intense speculation about a potential future congressional bid.

“Debbie has been a friend for many years. We have spoken over recent days, though my stance on this remains the same: Black representation is a non-negotiable for me,” Jones said in an Instagram statement. “Everyone deserves to have a seat at the table to ensure our communities are represented by those with their same lived experience. This is not about Debbie because she has shown that she can lead; that’s not the argument nor should it be the fight, at least not mine. My fight is for Black representation, and I am in the business of expanding it, not diminishing it.”

Under Sen. Shevrin Jones’ Instagram statement, local constituents, community advocates, and digital organizers have heavily mobilized and shared their thoughts.

“The ‘safe white person’ strategy consistently doesn’t work in the bigger context and sends a message that even white people on the same side of the table don’t value us either,” wrote one local commenter, identifying online as hydro88wr.

Another platform user, mostlyharmlessunicorn, noted, “Being an ally means recognizing that leadership opportunities should expand for communities that have historically been underrepresented and lived experience is a large part of representation for diverse communities. The best thing she could do is support the candidate that is the best fit for the district and in this case she isn’t the best fit.”

As local resident Chantelle summarized: “We’re thankful for Debbie’s service, but it’s time for her to retire!”

For others, the issue was simpler, viewing the situation as an unyielding boundary line for minority representation.

“In other words, Big Shev said, ‘we cool and all Debbie, but I’m Black first,’” wrote voter BJ Brunious via social media.

Constituents also expressed gratitude toward Jones for breaking establishment ranks to defend his district’s voting infrastructure.

Matthew Pigatt, a local constituent, publicly thanked the state senator, writing, “Thank you for amplifying our voice and representing us!” Meanwhile, another community observer, grrrrrrice57, added praise to Jones for “standing up unlike the ‘others’ so-called elected leaders ducking and dodging the big issue.”

The Florida Legislative Black Caucus echoed Jones’s urgency.

“At a time when the Supreme Court has gutted the Voting Rights Act, when Black representation across the South is under coordinated attack, and when Florida Republicans have aggressively dismantled Black political power through redistricting, this decision reinforces the same message Republicans have pushed for years: that Black representation does not matter,” DNC members added in a joint statement as reported by WLRN.

Jones has continually warned that the current political climate demands leadership that matches the real-time urgency felt by constituents on the ground.
