A short film rooted in Liberty City and centered on the complexities of girlhood is gaining national attention.
Miami-born filmmaker Latavia Young’s upcoming narrative short film Peeling has been officially selected as a “Project We Love” by Kickstarter, a designation reserved for standout campaigns recognized by the platform’s editorial team for creativity and quality.
The badge places Peeling among a curated group of projects highlighted to Kickstarter’s global audience of nearly 23 million backers, increasing visibility at a critical moment in the film’s fundraising campaign. Only a small percentage of campaigns receive the distinction.
“Getting the ‘Project We Love’ badge is a massive vote of confidence,” Young said in a press statement. “To have Kickstarter recognize that vision, specifically for a film centered on the delicate nuances of girlhood and memory in Liberty City, is validating.”
Set in Liberty City, Peeling follows 10-year-old Kendra as she navigates fragmented memories and begins to understand her own vulnerability. The film explores themes of girlhood, affection, and coming of age against the backdrop of socio-economic challenges.
The project features a cast and crew with strong ties to the industry and South Florida, including Hattie Estime-Haskins, Krys Marshall, and cinematographer Diana Matos. Editing is led by Jamie Kennedy, whose credits include popular television and film projects.
With its Kickstarter campaign now in its final stretch, the team is raising finishing funds to complete post-production and support festival submissions. The campaign runs through May 10, 2026.
With added visibility from the “Project We Love” recognition, the filmmakers are calling on supporters of independent film and local storytelling to help close the remaining funding gap.
