Senator Shevrin Jones (D-Miami Gardens) has once again redefined what is possible in Florida politics. On February 17, 2026, his colleagues in the Florida Senate Democratic Caucus voted unanimously to designate him as the Senate Democratic Leader for the 2028-2030 legislative cycle.
Senator Jones is no stranger to the history books. His journey has been defined by a series of groundbreaking achievements. In 2018, he became the first openly LGBTQ Black person to serve in the Florida Legislature.
Then, in 2020, he broke the “lavender ceiling” of the Florida Senate, becoming the first LGBTQ Floridian elected to the chamber.
When he assumes his role as the highest-ranking Democrat in the chamber, he will become the first LGBTQ Minority Leader in Florida history.
Beyond the headlines, Senator Jones has earned a reputation as a relentless advocate for his constituents. Since first entering the House in 2012, he has championed bipartisan legislation focused on:
- Dignity for Incarcerated Women: Passing critical bills to ensure humane treatment and essential healthcare.
- Education: A former chemistry teacher and Ph.D. in Educational Leadership, he has been a vocal defender of public schools and student safety.
- Economic Opportunity: Pushing for affordable housing, healthcare access, and voting rights.
Upon being named Leader-designate, Jones emphasized that his leadership would remain rooted in the community. His selection marks a strategic multi-year transition for the party, as he is set to follow the 2026–2028 term of current Leader-designate Tracie Davis. For a state that has seen deep political divisions, Jones’s elevation signals a move toward a future defined by inclusion rather than fear.
