A recent council meeting in the Village of El Portal, Florida, has become the center of a firestorm. Councilman Anders Urbom is facing intense scrutiny and calls for resignation following a graphic and racially charged tirade directed at supporters of President Donald Trump.
During a recent planning and zoning meeting, Urbom detoured from local policy to deliver a blistering critique of white voters who support the MAGA movement. According to video and meeting transcripts, Urbom repeatedly used the N-word while recounting an anecdote from his childhood.
“I’m going to explain to you exactly why every white person in this country who voted for Trump is a racist piece of sh**,” Urbom stated before repeatedly using the racial slur. He accompanied the language with a gesture—mimicking looking through the barrel of a gun with one eye—while asking the crowd, “How do you wink at a [N-word]?”
Urbom claimed he was quoting the “culture of violence” he grew up with to illustrate his political point, but the delivery left fellow council members and residents stunned.
The backlash was immediate. Vice Mayor Darian Martin, a Black woman, directly confronted Urbom during the meeting, stating:
“I do understand that you’re trying to make a point… but as a white man, you should not be saying the N-word in any context. I find it offensive.”
While the room grew tense, the digital reaction was even more polarized. On social media, commenters under the Alexander News Show post reflected the visceral split in public opinion:
“We… approve his message. The lady, however, has a strike against her black card.”
“She missed the whole point,” noted one user, defending Urbom’s attempt to call out systemic racism, while others pointed out that “This is Miami,” suggesting such heated political clashes are becoming a hallmark of the region.
Following the meeting, Urbom offered an apology that some found as inflammatory as the original remarks; while he expressed regret for any offense, he simultaneously doubled down by stating he meant “no offense to anyone other than white Christians who voted for Trump.”
By late January 2026, as calls for his resignation grew from both the community and fellow council members, Urbom issued a more formal statement. He shifted his tone, acknowledging to reporters that using the racial slur was “outright traumatic” for many, though he initially maintained that his underlying political point was valid.
For the residents of El Portal, the question remains whether the council can move past the “vile and offensive” language to return to the business of local government, or if this “anti-white racist tirade”—as some residents labeled the January 22 outburst—has permanently fractured the village’s unity.
