Dr. Steve Gallon Speaks to TPS-Driven Enrollment Drop and Staffing Risks Facing Miami-Dade Public Schools

According to Local 10, the fight to extend Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian nationals is intensifying in South Florida. According to Miami-Dade School Board Member Dr. Steve Gallon III, federal inaction is no longer just a policy debate—it is a crisis that could “disrupt thousands of students’ lives and jeopardize more than two dozen employees,” as stated in a video.

The report highlights a climate of deep anxiety within the Haitian community. Dr. Gallon noted that this is a “continuation of consternation that has vexed this community” since at least 2017, when he first urged the federal government to extend protections.

When asked about the emotional state of the district, Gallon confirmed the atmosphere is heavy:

“Absolutely [they are anxious]. Especially with the TPS. When we start talking about the federal policy, what does that mean to Miami-Dade County Public Schools?”

The policy shift has potential implications for over 4,000 students across the county.

The district currently employs over 30 employees whose work authorization is now at risk. At North Miami Senior High, enrollment has dropped by about 200 students.

Dr. Gallon stated, “We have no doubt that the immigration policies of this country are now impacting Miami-Dade County Public Schools.”

A 12th-grade student at North Miami Senior High provided a harrowing account to Local 10 of why returning to Haiti is not an option for her family. She explained that gangs “broke our house in Haiti… they took everything,” and expressed specific fear for her aunt, a medical professional.

While a federal judge has paused the end of the humanitarian program and lawmakers are attempting a discharge petition to force an extension, the Local 10 report concludes that these paths remain pending.
