Sun Sentinel Says Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick Has Got To Go Following Not Guilty Plea

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, U.S. Representative Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-FL) officially entered a not guilty plea on February 3, 2026, against a 15-count federal indictment charging her with conspiracy to commit wire fraud, money laundering, and theft of government funds. Federal prosecutors allege that her family-owned business, Trinity Healthcare Services, improperly retained and laundered a $5 million FEMA overpayment to bankroll her 2021 campaign and purchase personal items, including a 3-carat yellow diamond ring.

This legal battle has been compounded by a 59-page House Ethics Committee report released in late January. The report details 27 counts of misconduct, including “substantial evidence” that Cherfilus-McCormick violated campaign finance laws by comingling personal and campaign funds.

In response to these developments, the Sun Sentinel editorial board has called for her immediate resignation, arguing that the mounting evidence and potential 53-year prison sentence make it impossible for her to serve her district effectively.

Investigators found that nearly every major transaction in her campaign account was preceded by a transfer from Trinity Healthcare, suggesting a direct link between the alleged theft and her political rise. The House Ethics Committee report also cited a “lack of candor” from the congresswoman during the probe.

While her attorney, William Barzee, maintains that the financial discrepancies were administrative errors and that she is “eager to get back to work,” the Department of Justice’s formal charges and the bipartisan House Ethics report have left her politically isolated. She remains the subject of an ongoing adjudicatory subcommittee hearing scheduled for March 5, 2026, which could lead to sanctions or expulsion from the House.
