The Spady Cultural Heritage Museum in Delray Beach is kicking off the school year with a unique kind of classroom—one that’s rooted in cultural pride, empowerment, and a deeper understanding of Black history.
Starting this September, the museum will launch the second season of its Black History Study Program–Palm Beach County, a free educational experience open to middle and high school students, as well as adults. The program, which first launched in 2024, offers a mix of classroom learning and field experiences that explore the richness and complexity of the African diaspora.
Last year’s students explored everything from ancient African civilizations and the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade to modern Black cultural contributions in America. Some sessions were held inside the museum’s historic Williams Cottage, while others took place out in the field—like a visit to RiverBend Park in Jupiter to walk the lands once used as safe havens by escaped slaves and Native American allies, or a trip to iThink Financial to learn real-world money management skills.
Now backed by an updated curriculum developed by educator and Power Builders, LLC founder Brian Knowles, the 2025–2026 season promises even more dynamic content. Knowles, who previously led a class on the global influence of hip-hop as a form of resistance and cultural expression, said this year’s focus is on engaging students through modern storytelling, technology, and empowerment.
“When we talk about Black history, we start from the beginning of time,” Knowles stated in a press release. “It’s easy to build a curriculum that connects with young people when it’s rooted in pride, creativity, and resilience. We’re not here to teach trauma—we’re here to teach truth, leadership, and legacy.”
The program is supported by The Cultural Council for Palm Beach County and the Palm Health Foundation, and was created in partnership with the Palm Beach County African Diaspora Historical and Cultural Society.
Classes will be held at the Spady Museum and Trinity United Methodist Church in West Palm Beach. Registration is now open for the fall session, which begins in September 2025.
