In 2021, former Senator Daphne Campbell’s son, Jason Campbell, was murdered in his apartment. Four years later, Sen. Campbell and her family were awarded $100 million for the wrongful death of her son.
Campbell, who served North Miami in the Florida Legislature, sued Biscayne Gardens condo complex a year after her son was shot in bed by Lakoria Washington—his girlfriend’s ex-girlfriend. According to reports, Washington “walked past the guard post on the Monte Carlo Condominium property and through the front gates while armed.” At no point was she stopped, questioned, or intercepted by the employees at the complex.
Washington took the elevator and went to her ex-girlfriend’s apartment. She knocked, the ex opened the door, and Washington forcibly entered the apartment and shot Jason in the chest. The ex fled and hid in a laundry room in fear of her life. Jason left the apartment to seek help and collapsed in the parking lot, according to the Miami Herald.
Prior to this incident, Washington came to Monte Carlo Apartment Complex and shot out the car windows of a different partner of her ex-girlfriend. Again, no one stopped her.
On July 15th, 2025, after many years of litigation, a jury found Monte Carlo Condominium Association, property manager AKAM On-Site Inc., the private security company EMS Protective Group and the tenant of the condo at fault in Jason Campbell’s wrongful death.
In response, Daphne and Hubert Cambell said that “this verdict will never bring our son back, but we hope it sends a strong message to all property managers and owners and compels them to provide adequate security before another family suffers like ours has.”
Jury members divided up the blame between the four parties with the property manager receiving 57% of the blame, the condo complex and private security holding 18% of blame, and the tenant 7%. The money will be awarded to the Campbell’s and Jason Campbell’s three children. $25 million each will be awarded to Jason’s parents for “pain and suffering” and his children will split the remaining $50 million.
This legal win is “one of the largest in recent Florida premises liability cases” yet, it will never be enough. Our community must fight for safe housing that ensures the safety of tenants over profits in every way.
Lakoria Washington plead guilty this month to the murder of Jason Campbell and is currently being held at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami-Dade County.
