Ten South Florida high school seniors are heading to college with additional support for their educational journeys after receiving scholarships from Florida Power & Light Company (FPL).
The students were recognized during a scholarship celebration at Manatee Lagoon – An FPL Eco-Discovery Center as part of FPL’s ongoing support of Science, Engineering, Communication, Mathematics and Enrichment (SECME) programs.
The scholarships are designed to help college-bound students, particularly those facing financial barriers, pursue higher education and careers in STEM and energy-related fields.
This year’s NextEra Energy Scholarship for Students in SECME recipients include:
- Anjan Kumar Sangam, Blanche Ely High School, Broward County
- Lynn-Sinthia Louis, Highlands Christian Academy, Broward County
- Devaughn Henry, American Senior High School, Miami-Dade County
- Zion Clark, American Senior High School, Miami-Dade County
- Mike Dorsainvil, Miami Norland Senior High School, Miami-Dade County
- Gabriel Diaz, Barbara Goleman Senior High School, Miami-Dade County
- Martell Mincey, Pahokee Middle-Senior High School, Palm Beach County
- Hannah Wong, Suncoast Community High School, Palm Beach County
- Leslie Cruz, Glades Central Community High School, Palm Beach County
- Aidan Burtoft, Suncoast Community High School, Palm Beach County
For Sangam, the scholarship represents more than financial assistance as he prepares for the next step in his education.
“I’m grateful to FPL for this scholarship and the difference it makes for students like me,” Sangam said in a press statement. “This support helps ease the financial burden of college and opens the door to opportunities that I didn’t think were possible. This scholarship is life changing.”
The scholarship recipients and their families learned the news together during the celebration, which gave students an opportunity to mark the achievement alongside their loved ones.
Kate Cotner, FPL’s director of community engagement, said the students represent the potential that can come from investing in STEM education and workforce development.
“Moments like today highlight the incredible potential of these students and the importance of investing in their futures,” Cotner said in a press statement. “By supporting STEM education and workforce development, we are helping create opportunities that strengthen both our communities and Florida’s economy.”
FPL says its scholarship programs are part of a broader effort to expand access to educational opportunities and encourage students to pursue careers in STEM and related fields.
For students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, scholarships can also help reduce some of the financial barriers associated with pursuing a college education.
As these 10 students prepare to begin their college careers, FPL says its education initiatives are intended to help build a pipeline of future talent while giving students greater access to opportunities in fields that continue to shape Florida’s workforce.
