More than 90 girls gathered at the Overtown Performing Arts Center in Miami for Girl Power Rocks’ “It Takes a Village” Girls Summit, a day focused on leadership, mentorship and empowerment.
According to a news release, the summit provided participants with interactive leadership experiences, presentations from women leaders, participant testimonials and a recognition ceremony designed to help girls build confidence and develop leadership skills.
The event also highlighted the role of community partnerships in supporting young people. Major Keandra Simmons and officers with the City of Miami Police Department attended the summit to encourage participants and emphasize the importance of community support.
Members of the Iota Pi Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. served as Sister Circle Mentors, leading interactive breakout sessions where participants created custom poster boards and other projects while learning teamwork, entrepreneurship and leadership skills. The hands-on activities encouraged collaboration, creativity and confidence while reinforcing the value of sisterhood, according to the release.
The summit concluded with a back-to-school backpack shopping experience through a partnership with Kinnect. Organizers said the initiative helped provide participants with the supplies they need to begin the upcoming school year.
“Seeing our community rally around these incredible girls, from law enforcement and dedicated sorority sisters to our passionate mentors, staff and partners, was nothing short of transformative,” Thema Campbell, president and CEO of Girl Power Rocks, said in the news release.
LaShawna Stanley, mentor coordinator and event coordinator for the “It Takes a Village” Summit, said in the release that the event demonstrated the impact of investing in young people.
“The summit proved once again that when we invest in our youth and surround them with support, belief, and practical resources, there is no limit to what they can achieve,” Stanley said in the release.
