“Enough Is Enough”: State Rep. Angie Nixon Vying for the U.S. Senate Seat in Florida

Editor’s Note: Hy-Lo News wants readers to be aware of who is running for office in their legislative and congressional districts to ensure an informed electorate ahead of the upcoming elections.

Florida State Representative Angie Nixon is another major Florida candidate in the running for the U.S. Senate. Shaking up the primary field, the Jacksonville Democrat officially entered the race earlier this year on January 22, 2026, pivoting her attention from state policy in Tallahassee toward a higher federal profile.

This bold federal push aligns closely with Nixon’s history of high-profile resistance in the state capitol. As Hy-Lo News reported a few weeks ago, Nixon was front and center during the intense democratic pushback against Governor Ron DeSantis’ controversial redistricting plans. When DeSantis signed the legislation changing the congressional maps—a move heavily criticized by opponents for diluting Black voting power—Nixon actively participated in a dramatic protest right on the congressional floor. She and her colleagues stood firm on the house floor, wearing shirts that read “Stay Woke” and leading chants to disrupt the legislative session, declaring to the public that “it’s the people’s map.”

According to her official launch statement published by First Coast News, Nixon frames her campaign entirely around practical, top-of-mind consumer concerns facing working families across the state:

“Floridians are being crushed by an affordability crisis that Florida’s leadership has ignored for far too long,” Nixon said. “The cost of everything is exploding: groceries, healthcare, and childcare. Property insurance has doubled in the last four years, and housing costs are driving Floridians out of the towns they grew up in. Enough is enough.”

Nixon, who has represented Duval County in the Florida House of Representatives since 2020, joins a competitive primary lineup eager to secure the party nomination for the special election. Per tracking metrics reported by CBS News, whoever secures the nomination will directly challenge incumbent Republican U.S. Senator Ashley Moody. Moody, the state’s former attorney general, was appointed by Governor Ron DeSantis to fill the vacancy left by Marco Rubio following his confirmation as U.S. Secretary of State.

In a recent Instagram face-to-camera video, Rep. Nixon spoke to the current political climate: “This moment requires bold leadership. I’ve showed time and time again that I’m willing to listen to the people of Florida and speak up for us. That’s why I’m running for U.S. Senate.”

During her legislative career, Nixon built a strong progressive profile centered heavily on voting rights, public school advocacy, and robust grassroots mobilization. As local residents keep tabs on the changing boundaries and local figures within their districts, knowing who is in the running remains essential for navigating the midterms.

The primary election is currently scheduled for August 18, 2026, setting the stage for the general election matchup this November, as outlined by the Ballotpedia 2026 Florida Senate Election Tracker. To learn more about Rep. Angie Nixon and her campaign values, click here.
