Dr. Gallon Speaks on Miami-Dade School Board Vote on Closing, Repurposing 9 Schools

The Miami-Dade County School Board is moving forward with a proposal to close or merge nine local schools, a decision driven by a sharp decline in student enrollment that officials say threatens the quality of education.

According to district data reported by NBC 6, each of the schools on the proposed closure list has lost more than 100 students over the last five years.

School Board Member Dr. Steve Gallon emphasized that the consolidation is necessary to preserve vital educational opportunities. Under Florida’s funding model, declining enrollment directly slashes state dollars sent to the district.

“We have to make sure that we have educational programs that are viable, that we’re able to provide all of the courses, all of the electives, all of the experiences that children deserve in an elementary school,” Gallon shared with NBC 6.

District officials attributed the shrinking student population to several sweeping factors, including skyrocketing housing costs driving families out of South Florida, declining birth rates, stricter federal immigration policies, and a rise in alternative school choice options.

The looming vote has sparked intense anxiety among parents, many of whom express deep uncertainty about the future. Several families have warned that if their neighborhood schools shutter, they will pull their children from the public school system entirely to pursue homeschooling or enrollment in private and charter schools.

While the changes disrupt traditional setups, some board members see an opportunity for innovation. Under a plan proposed for Board Member Danny Espino’s district, Miami Springs Middle School would merge into Miami Springs High School to form a unified 6-12 academy.

Espino noted that this format could provide major academic advantages, allowing accelerated middle schoolers to earn up to eight high school credits before officially entering the ninth grade.Miami-Dade County’s school board is set to vote on a final decision by June 17, said Elmo Lugo, a district spokesperson.
