The Miami Beach Bandshell will transform into a global stage for Cuban music and culture on May 8, as Community Arts and Culture (CAC) presents Son Del Mundo, an international concert honoring Cuban Son Day.
Headlined by Cuban folk ensemble Cortadito, the event begins at 7 p.m. and features a lineup of internationally recognized artists, including Aymée Nuviola, Roberto Torres, Ronkalunga, Toto Omana, and Sanba Zao.
The concert arrives as son cubano continues to gain global recognition. In 2025, the genre was officially inscribed by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, highlighting its cultural significance and lasting influence on music worldwide.
“I’m thrilled to be producing this concert celebrating Cuban Son Day,” said Jose Elias, co-founder of Cortadito and curator of the event, in a statement. “We are teaming up with an exceptional group of musicians and collaborators to perform this music that we love so dearly. The global impact that son has made throughout the world is very significant, and I took that into account in my curatorial process for this show.”
Alongside the headliners, audiences can expect performances from Morikeba Kouyate and Michelle Fragoso, as well as a pre-show Cuban son dance lesson led by Barbaro Ramos of Los Muñequitos de Matanzas. DJ Le Spam will also spin a set of Cuban son classics from around the world.
Cortadito, known for preserving traditional Cuban folk music, draws inspiration from groups like the Buena Vista Social Club and continues to push the genre forward. The band released its latest album, The Guajiro Triangle, in 2025, blending original compositions that reflect the past, present, and future of son cubano.
Nuviola, often referred to as “La Sonera del Mundo,” brings a decorated career that includes Grammy and Latin Grammy wins, while Torres, known for the classic “Caballo Viejo,” continues to perform into his 80s, contributing decades of influence to the genre.
Ronkalunga adds a modern twist, blending traditional Cuban sounds with pop, rock, and funk, while international performers like Toto Omana and Sanba Zao highlight the genre’s global reach through African and Caribbean musical traditions.
The event is open to all ages, with tickets priced at $42.95, including fees. Food and beverages will be available for purchase, and the open-air venue will host the concert rain or shine.
