Media Personality Funky Dineva Critiques 90s Icon Chilli Over Alleged Support for President Trump

The intersection of pop culture and politics reached a boiling point this week as media personality Funky Dineva issued a critique of R&B and Hip-Hop legends Chilli and Salt, following their alleged public support for President Donald J. Trump.

In a viral broadcast, Dineva (born Quentin Latham) rejected the notion of political neutrality, arguing that the stakes of the current administration have rendered the phrase “to each their own” obsolete within the Black community.

Addressing the viral debate over why male artists like Nelly, Ludacris, and Rick Ross have not faced the same intensity of backlash for their ties to the administration, Dineva offered a provocative sociological perspective. He argued that the discrepancy isn’t rooted in misogyny, but it’s a matter of societal expectations.

“Part of the reason that the Black men don’t get the same backlash as the Black women is because the bar is set so low for them, and we didn’t expect [anything] from them anyway,” Dineva said. “We look at Black women and expect them to be the saviors of the world… the ones with common sense that’s going to hold the whole race together.”

The critique took a personal turn as Dineva addressed Salt (Cheryl James) of Salt-N-Pepa, who recently defended TLC’s Chilli (Rozonda Thomas) amid public outcry following Chilli’s donations to campaigns linked to Trump and a resharing of a Michelle Obama conspiracy theory. Referring to the current political climate as “life or death,” Dineva characterized any support for the MAGA movement as a declaration of enmity.

“A line has been drawn in the sand,” Dineva stated. “Either you’re a friend, or you’re an enemy. That’s just where we’re at.”

He specifically highlighted the irony of Chilli’s support, noting the President’s recent budget proposals. “This man is cutting funding that’s going towards sickle cell… and your bandmate [T-Boz] has sickle cell,” he noted, referring to the chronic health struggles of TLC member Tionne Watkins.

While Dineva’s comments reflect a deep-seated frustration among many, recent data highlights a complex and shifting landscape for Black voters:

According to recent Pew Research Center polling data, 82% of Black women continue to identify as Democrats, citing healthcare and voting rights as top priorities.

As Dineva noted, the economic climate remains a primary flashpoint. Recent Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that while the national unemployment rate remains low, the Black unemployment rate (6.2%) remains nearly double that of white workers (3.4%).

Neither Chilli nor Salt has issued a formal response to Dineva’s remarks, however, Chilli did address the controversy in a video statement to TMZ, firmly denying any intentional involvement in the divisive repost. The singer expressed her “utmost respect” for Michelle Obama, explaining that she was entirely unaware the post had gone up until she was alerted by a flurry of messages.

In response to supporting campaigns linked to President Trump, Chilli maintains she was misinformed about what she was donating to.

“I am not MAGA,” Chilli countered in her follow-up statement, “and do not support any of the many policies that are causing great harm to the American people.”

Attributing the incident to a “mistake too many make,” Chilli clarified on Instagram that she failed to read the fine print and believed she was simply supporting veterans and anti-human trafficking efforts.

While the TLC singer pleaded for grace, the explanation was met with skepticism from some fans, who pointed to her social media following list of conservative figures and a 2017 “All Lives Matter” comment as evidence of a deeper pattern.

The controversy threatens to overshadow the upcoming “It’s Iconic” tour featuring TLC, Salt-N-Pepa, and En Vogue. Dineva called for a boycott of the 90s icons, suggesting they be replaced by groups like SWV or Total.

“We really ain’t even getting much of nothing but nostalgia,” Dineva said of the current performances. “TLC ass can get the [hell] up off the tour as far as I’m concerned.”
