A controversy that began in South Florida, stretched across the country to Los Angeles, and has now returned to its home base is drawing federal scrutiny. Former Miami-Dade County Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho is under federal investigation, with authorities reportedly examining a nonprofit foundation he helped establish, NBC Miami reported.
Carvalho, who has led the Los Angeles Unified School District for the past four years, was the subject of FBI searches at his home and office. Subpoenas were also served to Miami-Dade County Public Schools, the district’s inspector general, and the Foundation for New Education Initiatives—now called the Miami-Dade Public Schools Foundation.
Alan Fein, its treasurer then and now, told NBC Miami he has never witnessed any wrongdoing and noted that independent audits returned clean reports each year. Fein added that the district’s inspector general previously found no violations.
Additionally, Miami Herald reports that the probe also involves Joanna Smith-Griffin, the now-indicted CEO of AllHere Education, an artificial intelligence education startup.
Smith-Griffin was charged in November 2024 by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York with securities fraud, wire fraud, and aggravated identity theft. According to the indictment, she defrauded investors of nearly $10 million by misrepresenting AllHere’s revenue, cash, and school district clients, while using some of the funds for personal expenses, including a home purchase and a wedding. AllHere later filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy.
At this time, the investigation comes amid declining enrollment in Miami-Dade schools. Funding for public schools in Florida is closely tied to enrollment, intensifying financial pressures on the district. Hy Lo News will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.
