The City of Miami Gardens recently recognized Steve Gallon III with a formal resolution celebrating his leadership and impact in District 1 of Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
The resolution, sponsored by Councilman Reggie Leon, highlights a significant shift in academic performance across the district since Gallon’s election in 2016. At the time, District 1 had the highest number of failing schools in the county. According to city officials, every school previously rated “F” or “D” has since been eliminated.
Today, 100% of District 1 schools are rated A, B, or C, with nearly 75% earning an A or B. Both Miami Gardens high schools — Miami Carol City Senior High School and Miami Norland Senior High School — are now rated “A.”
City leaders also pointed to Gallon’s role in securing nearly $2 billion in funding for teacher pay increases and school safety initiatives, along with more than $200 million in school construction improvements. The resolution further cited his work advancing achievement gap monitoring policy and establishing community-centered initiatives such as the District 1 Student of the Month program and the District 1 Black History Month Showcase, which is entering its 10th year.

During the recognition ceremony, Leon also presented Gallon with a street sign designated for Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.. Gallon became a member of the fraternity in 1988 while attending Florida A&M University.
City officials described Gallon as a respected national voice for equity and access in public education, thanking him for his continued commitment to children and families in Miami Gardens.
“I am deeply honored by this recognition from the City of Miami Gardens,” Gallon said in a press statement. “This progress belongs to our principals, teachers, students, parents, and community partners who refused to accept failure as the norm. Together, we have proven that excellence is possible in every zip code — and we will continue the work to ensure every child has access to opportunity, equity, and success.”
