On her personal YouTube channel, Miamian Jessie Woo detailed a tragic case of obsession and violence that unfolded in Tamarac, Florida, when 23-year-old Kayla Hodgson was found dead in her apartment on July 13, 2022. The Broward County Sheriff’s Office launched an investigation after Hodgson’s body was discovered by a man who had been trying to reach her earlier that morning.
Hodgson was then found unresponsive on the floor of her Northwest 57th Street apartment, lying in a pool of blood. Deputies and paramedics were dispatched immediately, and police began canvassing the area and reviewing surveillance footage from neighboring homes.
Investigators later identified 28-year-old Sakiyna Thompson from New York as a suspect. Thompson flew from New York to Florida early that morning to confront Hodgson over a Haitian man they were both involved with. Surveillance footage showed Thompson wearing a wide-brimmed hat, gloves, and a mask approached Hodgson’s apartment. Authorities reported that Thompson changed clothes after the attack, leaving the scene wearing Hodgson’s clothing in an apparent attempt to evade identification.
Jessie Woo provided commentary on the case, using the tragic events to issue a strong message about self-worth and dangerous behavior.
“No man, and I repeat, no man is worth leaving your freedom, your future, your dignity, and your frontal lobe behind,” she stated. “Stalking, threatening, lurking, pulling up uninvited to a stranger’s door at 5 a.m., catching flights to fight strangers… Baby, that is not love. That is not loyalty. That is mental instability.”
Woo also used the victim’s potential to emphasize the severity of the loss.
“Kayla Hodgson should still be here. She had beauty, youth, a career, two careers, and a future,” she said. “Yet, all that was stolen from her, from someone who didn’t know how to separate rejection from reality.”
Family and friends of Hodgson have expressed similar sentiments during court proceedings.
“For the rest of your existence, you will have to look in the mirror every day, regret your decisions, and think about how foolish you are,” one family member said, addressing the accused in court. Sakiyna Thompson was found guilty of first-degree murder in December 2025.
