27-Year-Old Bryan Calvo Makes History as Florida’s Youngest Mayor, Outgoing Interim Mayor Directs City Staff to Restrict Communication Amid Transition

According to NBC Miami, history has officially been made in South Florida. At just 27 years old, Bryan Calvo clinched a decisive victory on Election Day with over 52.9% of the vote, becoming the youngest mayor not only in Hialeah but across the entire state of Florida. Calvo’s win shows that there’s a powerful desire for a new political era in one of the region’s most populous, diverse cities.

However, according to the Miami Herald, outgoing interim Hialeah Mayor Jacqueline Garcia-Roves has moved to restrict communication between city employees and the Mayor-Elect. In an email sent to nearly all department heads, fire command staff, and police officers, Garcia-Roves instructed them to “restrict communication with the Mayor-Elect effective immediately,” a move that may complicate the city’s transition of power.“This victory belongs to every family that has worked hard and refused to give up on this city,” Calvo stated in his victory speech. “Hialeah chose transparency over corruption and results over rhetoric. My commitment is to restore integrity to City Hall and ensure government works for everyone, not just the well-connected few.”

Local 10 cites that Garcia-Roves warned that communication without her “written approval” is a “violation of administrative procedure” and will be “addressed accordingly.” Garcia-Roves claims that the restriction is just about process, stating, “This way nothing gets lost in transition. We know who’s meeting with who, and we’re knowing what’s provided, because if not then it’s just going to be a mess.”

The mayor-elect said that the block clearly keeps him from forming his government and getting the real data he needs—specifically mentioning lists of city employees and their salaries.

“Obviously, I need a lot of information from the city in order to be able to form my government,” Calvo said, adding that he hopes the situation doesn’t become “something hostile.” He will take the oath of office on January 12.

A native of Hialeah, Calvo holds degrees from Harvard University in Political Science and Florida International University in Law. His political ascent started early: he became the youngest-ever Hialeah City Council member at 23, where he built a reputation as a fierce reform advocate known for publicly challenging the previous administration over budget issues, water fees, and government transparency.

Running on a solid “Hialeah First” platform, Calvo promised change: cutting taxes and water fees, eliminating political pensions, and creating special units to fight money laundering and financial crimes. His core focus is protecting residents from fraud, especially condo owners and seniors. He pledges to end property taxes for those 65 and older.
