According to the Associated Press, the federal government has approved a $608 million reimbursement to Florida for building and operating a controversial immigration detention facility in the middle of the Everglades — a site labeled “Alligator Alcatraz,” and built under Governor Ron DeSantis’ direction.
The recent decision, confirmed by the Department of Homeland Security, has reignited backlash from civil-rights groups, environmental advocates, and the Miccosukee Tribe, who argue that the facility violates both ecological and human-rights protections.
In August 2025, U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams ordered the facility shutdown within 60 days, ruling that it violated federal environmental laws.
U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson applauded the decision in a statement, saying, “It was cruel, careless, and destructive from the start and should have never been built. I’m glad it’s closing, and we must never repeat the mistakes made at this facility anywhere else.”
Governor Ron DeSantis posted on X in September 2025:
“The mission continues at Alligator Alcatraz. The media was wrong. The leftist judge has been overturned. Florida will keep leading the way.”
According to Politico, a federal appeals court later paused the ruling — reasoning that the review wasn’t mandatory until federal funds were officially reimbursed. Now, with reimbursement green-lit, that legal defense may no longer hold.
Though approved, the reimbursement isn’t final: the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) must still review Florida’s spending before releasing the funds — a step that could trigger a full Environmental Impact Statement, which the state has so far avoided.
Meanwhile, the Department of Justice has questioned Florida’s handling of detainees, revealing that some people held at “Alligator Alcatraz” were never in formal immigration proceedings.
During his July 1 visit to the facility, the Associated Press reported that President Donald Trump praised the project as “government working together,” calling it “so professional and so well done.”
He joked, “The name ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ is very appropriate because I looked outside, and that’s not a place I want to go hiking anytime soon.”
As FEMA completes its review and the courts weigh new challenges, Florida’s massive payout could come with even bigger consequences.
