Florida Rising Demands Accountability from Miami-Dade Commission Following ICE Deal

In a recent carousel post on Instagram, the group, Florida Rising, along with, Power U Ctr For Social Change, Miami Workers Center, Miami Freedom Project, and Community Justice Project called out elected officials for “hiding behind ‘complying’ with I.C.E. and the law to justify” damaging policy that rips apart communities.

On June 26th, Miami-Dade residents gathered in opposition of a Basic Ordering Agreement (BOA) and the 287(g) program that allows county resources to be redirected to assist Trump in his quest to apprehend and detain “immigrant workers, students, families, and neighbors” as reported by Florida Rising. According to the National Sheriff’s Office Association, the implementation of BOA occurred in collaboration “with 17 Florida Sheriffs that aim[s] to prevent the release of criminal aliens back into the community.”

During the June 26th public meeting, immigration advocates were told by Board Chair Anthony Rodriguez that if anyone speaks out of turn, no one will be able to speak on the subject in perpetuity.

Shortly after, two people were violently removed from the chambers for asking questions regarding the matter. The move was an “abuse of power” and a “pattern” that the co-signing organizations have seen often from the City of Miami.

Community groups are calling for Miami-Dade to do more for their residents and have called for the Mayor and commissioners to “ensure residents feel safe in County Hall, reverse the BOA and 287(g) agreements, and file a lawsuit to stop the operation of Alligator Alcatraz” while also demanding transparency, real action, and a commitment to residents.

Tensions continue to rise between residents and the city but one thing is clear: holding elected officials accountable as a community is more important than ever before.
