Byron Donalds Wants to Lead Florida — But How Different Is He from DeSantis?

Byron Donalds, endorsed by Trump for the Florida Governorship, has emerged as a leading candidate. With a focus on education reform, he aims to improve student proficiency but faces challenges from existing Republican policies. Donalds emphasizes individual liberty and economic growth, urging voters to critically assess candidates’ values.

Byron Donalds received a glowing recommendation to run for the Florida Governorship by Donald Trump via Truth Social in late Feburary—a year before before election day.

Trump’s endorsement propelled Donalds into the political spotlight and has placed him as a front runner for the Governorship. First Lady Casey DeSantis was initially set to run however, that seems less than likely. Donalds, the Brooklyn born, FAMU graduate, and current congressman, is in line to become the first Black Republican governor in United States History but how will he differ from previous leadership?

In an interview with the Miami Herald, Donalds replies to a similar question with “in terms of policy outcomes and political stances, there’s not going to be much change.” When comparing himself to Governor Ron DeSantis, Donalds boasts about a career in finance guiding his political stances while affirming his commitment to ultra-far right beliefs.

Byron also claims to have an invested interest in ensuring students are competent in the four core subjects of math, reading, science, and history. His goal is to raise our state proficiency from 30% to 50% because “if you’re proficient in core subjects, now you’re even more ready to take on the challenges of the world” , says Donalds.

Ron Desantis and the Republican party have made concerted efforts to dismantle education and block funding to public schools. Byron does not address how those plans interfere with his current goal.

Throughout the interview, the Republican hopeful speaks highly of Alligator Alcatraz, looks forward to the passing of the Big Beautiful Bill, all while championing the Republican party as “a party built on ideals…of individual liberty, human freedom, economic growth, sound policy, safe streets and children being educated.”  According to Donalds, those are “principles that whether you’re Black, whether you’re Cuban, whether you’re Puerto Rican or Dominican — you can agree with that.”

Many people are seeking change and perhaps non-Democratic candidates are an option, however—not all skinfolk are kinfolk. Continue to vet candidates based on their beliefs, track record, and their investment into our communities.
