City of Tamarac Earns “Autism Inclusive City” Designation, Launches New Sensory-Friendly Initiatives

Tamarac is making strides toward inclusivity. During its April 23 commission meeting, the City officially proclaimed April 2025 as “Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month” and celebrated a major milestone—earning the title of an “Autism Inclusive City” from Helping Adults with Autism Perform & Excel (HAAPE).

The designation recognizes Tamarac’s commitment to creating a supportive and inclusive environment for residents on the autism spectrum. To achieve it, the City partnered with Neuro Consulting Solutions (NCS) to train staff, assess city facilities, and develop visual supports that cater to neurodiverse needs. Tamarac first responders also received specialized training to ensure positive and informed interactions with autistic community members.

In recent months, the City has launched several sensory-friendly events, including a well-received Sensory-Friendly Egg Hunt that provided a welcoming space for children with sensory sensitivities ahead of the larger Springfest celebration.

“Tamarac is focused on creating a city where everyone—regardless of ability—feels valued and supported,” city officials shared in a press release. The initiative aligns with Tamarac’s broader mission to foster inclusive spaces across parks, public programs, and emergency services.

With this recognition, Tamarac joins Cooper City, Parkland, and Weston as the fourth Autism Friendly City in Broward County. To celebrate and raise awareness, Tamarac Fire Rescue vehicles now display special decals that read “Accept, Understand and Love,” and the Broward Sheriff’s Office-Tamarac District will continue showcasing their colorful, puzzle piece-themed patrol vehicle at events throughout the year.

Residents are encouraged to attend upcoming sensory-friendly activities. For more information, contact Tamarac Parks and Recreation at (954) 597-3620 or visit Tamarac.org/AutismFriendlyCommunity.
