Miami Dade College and Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau Launch Partnership Focused on Showcasing Tourism’s Community and Economic Benefits

Miami Dade College (MDC) is partnering with the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau (GMCVB) to shine a spotlight on the powerful role tourism plays in the local economy—and to inspire the next generation of hospitality leaders through real-world opportunities and storytelling.

The collaboration brings together MDC’s far-reaching I AM MDC initiative and the GMCVB’s Brought to You by Tourism campaign, aiming to highlight how the visitor industry positively impacts the lives of Miami-Dade residents. A key focus of the initiative will be showcasing MDC alumni whose careers have flourished in hospitality, tourism, and related industries.

Investing in Students and Their Futures

The partnership kicks off with a $50,000 commitment from the GMCVB to support the I AM MDC initiative. Funds will go toward student scholarships, services, and workforce development programs, providing students with direct support as they prepare to enter tourism-related careers.

“This industry is the heartbeat of our thriving community,” said MDC President Madeline Pumariega in a press release. “We’re proud to contribute through workforce development and by advancing cultural assets that attract hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.”

In addition to financial support, MDC students will gain hands-on marketing experience by working on the campaign itself—helping to shape digital storytelling, community events, and partnerships with local businesses throughout 2025.

Highlighting Homegrown Talent and Industry Success

The new campaign will feature alumni success stories that illustrate how careers in tourism and hospitality can lead to long-term stability and growth—not only for individuals, but for their families and communities as well.

“By partnering with MDC, we can elevate tourism’s profile not just among students and alumni, but across the entire community,” said GMCVB President & CEO David Whitaker in a press release. “MDC has launched the careers of many tourism and hospitality professionals here, including some of our own colleagues.”

A Community-Wide Impact

Tourism is the leading economic engine in Miami-Dade County. According to the GMCVB, the industry supports 145,000 jobs and generates more than $1.5 billion in tax revenue annually, helping households save over $2,200 each year in local and state taxes.

The campaign aims to reinforce how the strength of this industry touches nearly every corner of the county—creating jobs, building cultural institutions, and providing quality-of-life benefits for residents.

“We’ve found an ideal partner in MDC to motivate alumni and students to share their own tourism journeys,” said GMCVB Chief Operating Officer Rolando Aedo, himself an MDC Hall of Fame alumnus.
