At the February 12, 2025, Miami-Dade County School Board meeting, School Board Member Dr. Steve Gallon III introduced Agenda Item B-9 to recognize the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project Class of 2025 Wilson Scholars.
Founded in 1993 by then School Board Member and current U.S. Representative Dr. Frederica S. Wilson, the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project aims to prevent dropouts and guide at-risk youth toward success. The program provides mentorship for male students ages 9-19, pairing them with professional adults who offer advice, guidance, and educational support.
Currently, the initiative serves more than 8,000 students across 131 schools in Miami-Dade County. It has also expanded to 62 chapters in Pinellas County, 37 chapters in Duval County, and 18 chapters in the Los Angeles Unified School District.
The 2025 Wilson Scholars include students from Coral Gables, Coral Reef, G. Holmes Braddock, Miami Beach, Miami Carol City, Miami Coral Park, Miami Lakes Educational Center, Miami Norland, Miami Northwestern, Miami Senior, South Dade, and William H. Turner Technical Arts Senior High Schools. Since its inception, the program has awarded over $50 million in scholarships to graduating seniors.
“From Florida City to Countyline Road, these young men represent the epitome of what we seek to develop as future fathers, leaders, servants, and citizens,” Dr. Gallon said in a press release. “The investment of time, talent, and treasure by countless committed and caring mentors into the learning and lives of these students has paid tremendous dividends and will produce positive outcomes for years and decades to come.”
