After a breakup or divorce, many men do not understand their fathers rights and child support. As a parent, you want what is best for your child and try to make decisions that will benefit them. Factoring in Florida’s child support guidelines, divorce laws, and timesharing can seem overwhelming and can lead to decisions that are against your best interests.
For instance, there is the old belief that the mother should be the child’s primary caregiver, and she should have the most say. But, there is no gender bias in family court, as unmarried fathers in Florida have equal rights regarding visitation and custody. Specifically, a new Florida law acknowledges rights of “unwed fathers where if both parents agree on paternity, they can sign a “Voluntary Acknowledgment of Paternity”.
Some men also do not understand how child support payments work and what financial information and income must be disclosed to the Court. When trying to support your children, it is essential to know how timesharing and a parenting plan effects support payments. The simple answer is to be honest, and never hide your finances.
Divorce or child custody is a highly emotional and often volatile time, and men tend to make decisions that are clouded by anger and frustration. Without guidance, they often agree to arrangements that leave them feeling like an intruder, visitor or part-time parent and they regret entering into these agreements at all. This takes them back to court in an attempt to modify the terms, which leads to more anxiety, frustration and despair, as well additional legal costs.
