Freshman State Rep, Ashely Gantt, Leads Cause to get Bill Passed Requiring Dedicated Lactation Spaces in Courthouses

Whew ya’ll, it’s been a long time coming!

Congratulations to Rep. Ashley Gantt on passing her first bill, HB 87, which requires dedicated lactation spaces in all county courthouses. The Senate voted 39-0 on the bill with the House following suit, voting 112-0.

With the support of Sen. Lori Berman and the Florida Association for Women Lawyers, Gantt was able to secure lactation spaces that are private, clean, and available for all courthouse patrons.

Too often, Gantt said, women with business at the courthouse leave “before their task was completed” because of the lack of facilities.

The legislation also makes it easier for women lawyers to return to their careers after childbirth, offering them hygienic spaces to nurse/pump away from clients and general public.

Rep. Hillary Cassel, D-Dania Beach, who returned to work when her son was just 11 weeks old, said this gives attorneys “the opportunity to know that we can go to court, often spend long hours there, and have that safe comfortable space to make sure our children are cared for.”

All Florida courthouses must adhere to the new bill by Jan. 1, 2024.
