It will be a night of New Orleans-style jazz and funk here in the Magic City and it will all be for a cause that benefits work to improve child literacy. The Lucy Project has teamed up with Miami Beach Bandshell, George Porter Jr & The Runnin’ Pardners, and Jon Cleary for their inaugural concert fundraiser on Nov. 11th at 7 p.m.
All proceeds go to direct services at The Lucy Project for evidence-based reading remediation. George Porter Jr. is an award-winning bassist, songwriter, and vocalist. George Porter Jr. & Runnin’ Pardners will headline the event and play a 90-minute set. They play locally and tour prolifically, garnering respect as the quintessential New Orleans band and as a significant national attraction within the jam band and festival scene. Guests will also be able to purchase food and beverages while they enjoy the show.
The Lucy Project was created to help support struggling readers. By offering free in-school programs and affordable out-of-school remediation with highly trained educators, they are committed to making literacy accessible to all.
Jon Cleary will perform as a special guest with a 60-minute piano set opening the show. Today, Jon Cleary’s work pays obvious homage to the classic Crescent City keyboard repertoire created by such icons as Jelly Roll Morton, Fats Domino, Professor Longhair, Art Neville, Dr. John, and James Booker – while also using it as a launching pad for a style that incorporates such diverse influences as ’70s soul and R & B, gospel music, funk, Afro Caribbean and Afro-Cuban rhythms, and much more.
