Opa-locka Apartments Renamed After Longtime Activist

By Nyam Daniel

The Opa-locka Community Development Corp. honored local advocate Mary Alice Brown this week by naming an apartment complex after her.

The @OLCDC renamed the Aswan Village Apartments the Mary Alice Brown Apartments. The 216-unit apartment complex is located at 2888 NW 132nd St. in Opa-locka.

Miami-Dade County and Opa-locka representatives also declared Thursday Mary Alice Brown Day after the “matriarch of the greater Opa-locka community.”

Brown, a founding member of the OLCDC’s board of directors, was a part of a group of parents that rode on school buses with Black children integrating Norland Senior High School. She also had a nearly 40-year nursing career.

“We are privileged to have honored Mrs. Mary Alice Brown by renaming the Aswan Village Apartments after her today,” OLCDC said in a social media post. “Her dedication to the OLCDC & desire to see the community of Opa-locka strive for more and better is deserving of this and more.”
