Miami’s Girl Power Rocks Joins Nationwide Push to Put Dollars Behind Black-Led Nonprofits

One act of generosity can help open doors to opportunities that shape a girl’s future.

On Friday, Aug. 28, Miami-based nonprofit Girl Power Rocks will join nonprofits and supporters across the country for Give 8/28, a national giving day created to increase support and visibility for Black-led and Black-benefiting nonprofit organizations during Black Philanthropy Month.

For Girl Power Rocks, the day is an opportunity to raise community support for its work serving girls and young women throughout Miami-Dade County.

For more than 26 years, the organization has worked to support what it calls “at-promise” girls through programs focused on education, mentorship, personal development and workforce preparation. Girl Power Rocks says it has served more than 10,000 girls through initiatives including Girls Rock After-School, Sister Circle Mentoring, the Girls Intervention Program PLUS, the Girls’ Choir of Miami and its Summer STEAM Workforce Training Camp.

The programs provide academic support, mentorship, social-emotional development, music and STEAM education, workforce training and mental health services, while creating spaces where girls can build confidence and develop skills for their futures.

Girl Power Rocks is also working to advance Mama Hattie’s House for Young Women, a planned permanent home for the organization’s programs and a transitional living residence for 20 young women ages 18 to 23 who are aging out of foster care in South Florida.

“Give 8/28 is an opportunity for our community to come together and invest directly in the potential of our girls,” said Thema Campbell, president and CEO of Girl Power Rocks, in a press release. “Every contribution helps us continue creating spaces where girls feel supported, discover their strengths and recognize the possibilities for their futures.”

Give 8/28 will take place from 8 a.m. through 11:59 p.m. on Aug. 28. Community members who want to support Girl Power Rocks can make a contribution through the organization’s Give 8/28 campaign page.
