Two days after the Florida Primary Election, Rod Mack has secured endorsements from Miami Gardens Councilman Reggie Leon and former Seat 4 candidate Angela Maria Wynter as he moves into the November runoff for the Miami Gardens City Council.
The endorsements give Mack support from both a sitting city leader and a former opponent who competed for the same seat during the Aug. 18 election. Wynter’s endorsement could be especially significant as Mack works to unite voters from the three-candidate race and expand his coalition before the runoff.
Mack and Mykita Cherry-Prime received the most votes in the Seat 4 contest, but neither candidate secured the majority needed to win outright. The election was held to choose a successor to term-limited Councilwoman Katrina Wilson.
Leon endorsed Mack on Thursday, Aug. 20, describing him as an experienced community leader prepared to serve on the council.
“Rod Mack brings the experience, perspective and commitment we need on the Miami Gardens City Council,” Leon said in a statement released by Mack’s campaign. “He has a proven record of investing in our community and creating opportunities for others.”
Leon said he believes Mack would be prepared to collaborate with fellow council members and address residents’ concerns.
“I know Rod will come to the dais ready to work, build partnerships and help deliver real results for the residents of Seat 4,” Leon said. “I’m proud to endorse him this November.”
Mack called the support especially meaningful because of Leon’s experience serving Miami Gardens residents.
“I am honored to have the support of Councilman Reggie Leon,” Mack said. “His service to Miami Gardens and his understanding of the needs of our residents make this endorsement especially meaningful.”
“I appreciate his confidence in my ability to serve, and I look forward to continuing the work of earning the trust of our community as we move toward November,” Mack added.
One day earlier, Mack’s campaign announced Wynter’s endorsement. Wynter ran against Mack and Cherry-Prime in the first round of the election but is now encouraging her supporters to back Mack in the runoff.
“I am endorsing Rod Mack because I believe he is a man of integrity who will follow through on his commitment to serve the people of Miami Gardens,” Wynter said.
Wynter said effective leadership requires remaining accessible and accountable to residents after an election ends.
“Rod understands that leadership is about listening to the community, being accountable to the people you represent and doing the work long after the election is over,” she said. “I believe Rod will lead with integrity, keep his word and put the needs of our residents first. That is why I am proud to support him for Seat 4 this November.”
The endorsement brings together two campaigns that presented separate visions to voters during the first round. Although Wynter’s support does not guarantee that her voters will follow her endorsement, it gives Mack an opportunity to build relationships with residents who initially supported another candidate.
Mack said the runoff should focus on bringing residents together rather than continuing the divisions of the earlier campaign.
“This runoff gives us an opportunity to come together not around personalities or politics, but around a shared vision for Miami Gardens,” Mack said. “Our residents deserve leadership that listens, leadership that is accessible and leadership that is prepared to work every day on their behalf.”
Mack also welcomed Wynter’s supporters and other residents who may not have supported him during the first election.
“I respect her commitment, her voice and the residents who stood behind her,” Mack said. “Having her support as we move forward means a great deal to me.”
“I welcome Angela, her supporters and every resident who wants to be part of moving Miami Gardens forward,” he added. “This is bigger than any one campaign. It is about our neighborhoods, our families and the future we are building together.”
Mack is a Miami Gardens resident, businessman, financial professional and community advocate. A former University of Miami linebacker, he is also a co-founder of the Miami Gardens Ravens youth football program.
His campaign is focused on public safety, neighborhood beautification, economic development, youth and senior programs, infrastructure and government transparency.
Mack will face educator Mykita Cherry-Prime in the Miami Gardens City Council Seat 4 runoff during the Nov. 3 general election. The City of Miami Gardens lists Mack and Cherry-Prime among the three candidates who competed for Seat 4, and post-election reporting confirmed that the two advanced to the runoff. The Miami Hurricane reported that the runoff will be held Nov. 3.
