Monica Segura was born and raised in Miami, Florida of Cuban parents. She is the proud daughter of a former Police Lieutenant. Monica attended University of Miami where she completed her Bachelor’s of Science with Magna Cum Laude distinction in 2002. Monica has continued her career working in-house for an insurance carrier. Monica will continue participating in the mentoring of young students by teaching Appellate Advocacy. Monica also served as Special Master/ Magistrate for the Town of Miami Lakes for four years. She enjoys spending time with her husband and young son. Monica is also an active participant at her Church.
Monica Segura responded to Hy-Lo News’ candidate questionnaire, sharing insights into her legal experience, judicial philosophy and the qualities she believes she would bring to the bench. Here’s what she had to say.

In plain language, what kinds of decisions would a judge in this position make? How could those decisions affect the daily lives of local residents—even people who never enter a courtroom?
A judge in this position is entrusted with deciding various important issues that affect the residents. Circuit judges preside over different matters including family matters, criminal matters and civil disputes.
How long have you been a lawyer, and what kinds of legal work have you done (prior to this campaign)?
I have been practicing civil law for over 20 years. I have also served as the Special Master/Magistrate for the Town of Miami Lakes for approximately four years.
List 2 cases where you were lead or co-counsel and why they are significant.
My most significant roles include the following: I have participated in the defense of several contractors in the Chinese Drywall litigation in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties as the Defense Liaison Counsel along with my partner for Installer Defendants from 2012 through 2019. As such, I also participated in the Multidistrict litigation (“MDL”) in this role in the New Orleans, Louisiana in Federal court. We handled thousands of claims including significant hearings and mediations. I was able to manage high volume litigation then and now efficiently and effectively. Additionally, my prior experience as a Special Master/Magistrate for the Town of Miami Lakes for almost four years would assist me in holding office. In that role, I also had to manage a busy calendar and gained quasi-judicial experience. In sum, my ability to manage a busy calendar puts me in a unique position to be successful when given the opportunity. I would be honored with the community’s trust.
How would you or do you make sure every person has a fair chance to be heard?

Is there anything you would like to share with voters that we did not ask?
Given my experience, my dedication to the community, and my character, I would take the role of becoming a judge with the upmost respect and make sure the law is followed. It would be my honor to serve in this capacity.
