Broward County Animal Care Urges Residents to Protect Pets During Extreme Summer Heat

Simple precautions can save lives as temperatures and heat indices soar

As South Florida experiences dangerously high temperatures, Broward County Animal Care is reminding pet owners that extreme heat can quickly become life-threatening for dogs and cats. A few simple precautions can help prevent heat-related illnesses and keep pets safe throughout the summer.

“South Florida’s summer heat can become deadly for pets in just minutes,” said Doug Brightwell, Broward County Animal Care Director. “Our message is simple: if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your pet. Make sure they always have access to fresh water, shade and a cool place to rest, avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day, and never leave a pet unattended in a parked vehicle. These small actions can make the difference between life and death.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control, the inside of a car can hit 109 degrees after just 20 minutes on an 80-degree day. Broward County Animal Care recommends the following hot weather safety tips:

● Provide plenty of fresh, cool water at all times to prevent dehydration. ● Limit outdoor activities to the early morning or evening and ensure pets have access to shade and cooling sources when temperatures exceed 85°F.

● Protect paws from hot pavement. Asphalt and sidewalks can become hot enough to burn paw pads. Consider walking pets on grass whenever possible.

● Never leave a pet in a parked vehicle. Even with windows cracked, temperatures inside a vehicle can rise to deadly levels within minutes. Leaving a pet unattended in a vehicle without air conditioning and proper ventilation is illegal under Florida law and may result in criminal penalties.
