The educator and community advocate discusses improving student achievement, supporting teachers, and strengthening partnerships between schools and families.
James Wright believes the future of Miami-Dade County begins in its classrooms.
During an interview on Hy-Lo News’ Can We Talk podcast, Wright, a candidate for the Miami-Dade County School Board’s District 1 seat, shared his vision for improving student outcomes, supporting educators and strengthening relationships between schools and the communities they serve.
“Our children deserve every opportunity to succeed,” Wright said. “That starts with making sure they have the resources, support and leadership they need.”
Wright said his decision to run stems from years of working alongside students, families and community organizations. Those experiences, he said, have given him firsthand insight into the challenges many schools face and the opportunities available to improve educational outcomes.
Throughout the interview, Wright emphasized that academic achievement should remain the district’s top priority while recognizing that students also need access to mental health resources, extracurricular opportunities and safe learning environments.
He said improving student performance requires collaboration among parents, teachers, administrators and community leaders.
“Education is a partnership,” Wright said. “When families, educators and the community work together, our students benefit.”
Teacher support also emerged as a central theme during the conversation.
Wright said educators should have the resources, respect and professional support necessary to help students thrive. He noted that retaining experienced teachers and creating positive working environments are essential to improving classroom outcomes across the district.
He also discussed the importance of fiscal responsibility, saying school board members must ensure taxpayer dollars are invested directly into programs that benefit students and improve educational opportunities.
As technology continues to reshape education, Wright said schools should embrace innovation while ensuring every student has equitable access to the tools needed to succeed in and outside the classroom.
He added that workforce development, career readiness and preparing students for college should remain priorities as the district plans for the future.
Transparency and accountability were recurring themes throughout the interview.
Wright said residents deserve school board members who remain visible in their communities, communicate openly with families and make decisions based on what is best for students rather than politics.
“I want people to know that I’ll be accessible and accountable,” Wright said. “This campaign is about serving our students and serving our community.”
Looking ahead, Wright said he hopes to help create an educational system where every child, regardless of background or ZIP code, has access to a high-quality education and the support necessary to reach their full potential.
Voters will decide the Miami-Dade County School Board District 1 race during the Aug. 18 election. The winner will serve a four-year term representing communities throughout District 1.
