Miami Takeover Offers South Florida Teachers and First Responders 50% off Tickets to Black Comedy Festival at Miami Beach Bandshell

South Florida teachers and first responders can score half-price admission to one of the summer’s biggest Black comedy events when The Miami Takeover returns to Miami Beach later this month.

The Art of Laughter/Comedy Vybez, the kickoff event for the 18th annual Miami Takeover, is scheduled for Friday, July 24, at the Miami Beach Bandshell. Organizers are offering 50% off tickets for teachers and first responders while a portion of ticket sales will benefit local Miami teachers.

Presented by The Miami Takeover in collaboration with the City of Miami Beach Tourism and Culture Department and the Miami Beach Visitor and Convention Authority, the event will blend stand-up comedy, live music and visual art during a six-hour celebration of Black entertainment and culture.

Doors open at 4 p.m., with programming beginning at 5 p.m. The evening will feature performances by Washington, D.C.’s Top 5 Band, Quinn & The Jukebox Band, Antfar Music, DJ Casper and R&B singer Latasha Bla’q, who is set to perform a tribute to Toni Braxton.

The comedy lineup includes nationally recognized comedians Esau McGraw, Joe Clair, Tony Woods, Ronnie Jordan, Ashima Franklin, Eddie Bryant, Lawrence Killabrew, Antoine Scott, Maria Sanchez and Howie Bell.

Miami’s Ingrid B and comedian Spunky Robinson will serve as hosts.

“The lineup of talent keeps expanding and getting better. This will definitely be a night of entertainment and belly-aching laughter that shouldn’t be missed,” Wylie Kynard, co-founder and partner of The Miami Takeover LLC, said in a press statement. “The country’s finest Black standup comedians are coming together in one intimate setting to put on a show like no other. This event is for true standup comedy lovers.”

Beyond comedy and music, attendees will also have the opportunity to experience a live art exhibit by Miami artist Rodney Royal, whose work celebrates Black identity, culture and history, including iconic Black comedians.

According to organizers, proceeds from artwork sold during the event will support the One R.O.Y.A.L. Effect Foundation, a nonprofit that provides arts education, academic tutoring and social-emotional support for youth in South Miami.

“The Miami Takeover has always been committed to supporting talented local Black artists, and this event offers a great opportunity to purchase some of Rodney’s incredible artwork,” Kynard said in a press statement.

The Art of Laughter/Comedy Vybez serves as the opening event for the four-day Miami Takeover festival, which returns to Miami Beach with entertainment, nightlife and cultural experiences throughout the weekend.

Early bird tickets are currently available through Eventbrite. The event is open to guests ages 21 and older.
