Miami Photographer Zykeria Rolle Debuts First Solo Exhibition “Overtown, STILL” in Historic Overtown

Miami artist and photographer Zykeria Rolle will debut her first solo photography exhibition this month with a project that aims to document and celebrate the everyday life, history and resilience of Overtown.

“Overtown, STILL,” opening July 3 at Peach Project Development in Overtown, will serve as both a photography exhibition and the launch of six months of community arts programming designed to transform the gallery into a gathering space for residents, artists and local organizations.

The exhibition grew out of Rolle’s personal documentary photography practice and expanded through her work as the photographer for GoingOvertown, where she documented neighborhood events, local businesses, churches, families and everyday moments throughout the historic Miami community.

According to Rolle, those experiences revealed a narrative of Overtown that often goes overlooked.

“Overtown, STILL is my love letter to the community that raised me and an invitation for others to experience Overtown through the people who continue to shape it every day,” Rolle said in a press statement.

The exhibition explores Overtown as a living community shaped by memory, care and cultural preservation. Through photography, archival materials and personal artifacts, the project centers the people and traditions that continue to define the neighborhood despite decades of redevelopment and displacement.

Featured works capture scenes of daily life, including children playing outdoors, neighbors gathering on front porches, church services, family histories and other moments that reflect the community’s ongoing vibrancy.

Visitors will also have an opportunity to contribute to a Community Altar, a collaborative installation honoring loved ones and highlighting the shared histories of Overtown and the African diaspora. Another installation, titled “Left Behind,” examines the objects and personal traces that remain after displacement, inviting reflection on memory, preservation and belonging.

Organizers say the exhibition’s broader goal is to expand access to arts programming in Overtown while fostering connections among artists, residents and cultural institutions.

Throughout its six-month run, “Overtown, STILL” will host artist talks, photography workshops, film screenings, youth programs, neighborhood conversations and collaborative events featuring local artists, historians and community organizations.

Rather than functioning as a temporary exhibition space, organizers hope the gallery activation will create opportunities for sustained artistic collaboration and community engagement in Overtown.

The exhibition opens with a public reception on Friday, July 3, at Peach Project Development in Overtown. Admission is free and open to the public. The exhibition will remain on view through December 2026.
