Ready to Disconnect? Experts Share 8 Tips for Planning a Successful Digital Detox Getaway

Searches for “digital detox” have surged, with interest up 163% since the beginning of the year.

Interest in digital detoxing is on the rise. Since the beginning of the year, searches for “digital detox” has grown 163%. With 47% of 18–34-year-olds saying their online habits now negatively affect their well-being, more travelers are seeking holidays designed to help them switch off completely. As travelers favor slower, stripped back breaks, digital detox holidays are quickly becoming one of the strongest travel trends, particularly among those seeking outdoor escapes and camping style experiences.

To help define what makes an effective digital detox getaway, digital rail ticketing platform, the experts at TrainPal, have shared with Hy-Lo News eight realistic tips on the key elements of a successful switch-off break and the benefits of going offline.

Tips for a digital detox getaway

1. Identify your goal

Whether it’s reconnecting with nature, spending quality time with friends and family, or simply giving yourself space to switch off. Pick a goal and let this shape how you plan your trip.

2. Build your getaway around offline activities

Activities such as hiking, wild swimming, journaling, reading, Pilates, or sunrise walks are perfect to distract your brain. Having a schedule of activities reduces the temptation to pick up your phone.

3. Set an expectation before you go

By updating friends and family that you will be offline, you don’t feel pressured to check messages. This sets a clear boundary and allows you to fully disconnect.

4. Leave digital distractions at home

By removing or hiding the apps you are most likely to scroll, you won’t feel tempted. Even small changes such as turning off notifications or switching to DND can make a big difference.

5. Choose an accommodation that supports switching off

Rural stays, cabins, cottages, where signal is naturally limited, can instantly help travelers stick to the detox.

6. Stay safe and prepared with offline alternatives

Take a map with you for the ultimate digital detox or download offline maps so you can limit additional screentime.

7. Swap screen time for offline moments

Pick a pastime and get stuck in, whether that’s journaling, checking in with yourself, reading a book, navigating with a map, or capturing memories on a digital camera.

8. Focus on presence, not perfection

A digital detox doesn’t have to be all or nothing. Allow yourself to use your phone for essential travel needs but be intentional about when and why you reach for it. This allows you to be flexible and in control of your choices.
