As Miami-Dade County prepares to open its new Mental Health Center, county commissioners have approved a series of oversight and accountability measures aimed at ensuring the facility operates transparently and delivers measurable results.
The legislation, sponsored by Miami-Dade Commission Chairman Anthony Rodriguez, received unanimous approval and establishes requirements for ongoing oversight of the county’s investment in behavioral health services.
According to Rodriguez, the measures are designed to ensure the facility’s finances, operations and outcomes are regularly reviewed while maintaining public confidence in how taxpayer dollars are spent.
“Expanding access to mental health care and maintaining strong oversight are not competing priorities. They go hand in hand,” Rodriguez said in a statement.
The Mental Health Center is expected to expand access to behavioral health treatment for Miami-Dade residents, including individuals experiencing mental health and substance use challenges. County leaders have also said the facility could help improve public safety outcomes by connecting more residents with care and treatment services.
Rodriguez introduced the legislation after calling for additional safeguards to monitor the center’s performance and long-term sustainability. The approved framework includes provisions focused on transparency, fiscal responsibility and independent oversight as the facility prepares to begin operations.
“The goal has always been simple: to make sure this facility succeeds,” Rodriguez said. “Success means helping people access treatment, improving outcomes, and ensuring taxpayers have confidence that this investment is being managed responsibly.”
The Mental Health Center is expected to become a key part of Miami-Dade’s behavioral health infrastructure as county officials work to address growing mental health needs across the community.
