Jessie Trice Community Health System Launches “It’s Better Together” Campaign to Combat Opioid Addiction in Miami-Dade

Miami-Dade residents struggling with opioid addiction may soon have greater access to treatment and recovery support through a new campaign launched by Jessie Trice Community Health System in partnership with University of Miami.

The organizations announced the launch of the “Better Together” campaign, a research-backed initiative aimed at addressing opioid addiction in high-risk communities across Miami-Dade County. The effort is designed to connect individuals battling opioid use disorder with lifesaving care, education, and treatment resources.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an estimated 6.1 million people ages 12 and older reported having an opioid use disorder in 2022. While overdose deaths have recently declined nationwide, opioids such as fentanyl, heroin, and prescription pain pills continue to contribute significantly to addiction and overdose cases.

“No one should have to struggle with opioids alone. It’s better together,” said JTCHS President Ryan Hawkins in a statement. “We are here to help. Treatment is available and recovery is possible for those who may be struggling.”

Opioids are a class of drugs that block pain signals in the brain. Health experts warn that misuse can quickly lead to addiction and increase the risk of overdose.

Through the campaign, JTCHS will offer Medication for Opioid Use Disorder, also known as MOUD, in outpatient primary care settings. Patients will also have access to trained providers and referrals to additional support services.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to reduce opioid addiction and opioid use disorder throughout Miami-Dade County, particularly in communities considered at higher risk.
