Caribbean Identity and Graffiti Culture Collide in Izia Lindsay’s New Miami Exhibition

A new exhibition coming to Diaspora Vibe Cultural Arts Incubator is exploring the connection between Caribbean identity, graffiti culture, and contemporary art through the work of Trinidad and Tobago-born artist Izia Lindsay.

Riddims of Graffiti, a solo exhibition by Lindsay, will be on view from May 14 through August 14, 2026, at Barry University Monsignor William Barry Library. The exhibition is presented by DVCAI at Barry University.

Lindsay, a mixed-media artist, muralist, and assistant professor at Augustana University, splits his time between Miami and Sioux Falls. His work often explores symbolism rooted in Caribbean iconography and post-colonial narratives.

According to organizers, Riddims of Graffiti traces Lindsay’s artistic evolution from his early experiences with graffiti culture into a broader visual language shaped by Caribbean history and identity. The exhibition examines how street art traditions can exist within institutional spaces while still carrying the stories and energy of the communities they come from.

“The walls carry the same stories as the islands,” Lindsay said in a press statement, commenting on the exhibition’s title and inspiration.

Growing up in Trinidad and Tobago, Lindsay was heavily influenced by Carnival culture and mas traditions, experiences that shaped his understanding of art as movement, sound, and communal storytelling.

The exhibition is curated by Rosie Gordon-Wallace, with exhibition design by Danielle Coates. Scholarship and exhibition essays were developed by DVCAI Scholar-in-Residence Cristin McKnight Sethi, PhD, alongside guest scholar Mariah Fox, MFA.

Lindsay is also the recipient of the 2026 DVCAI Catalyst Fellowship for mid-career exhibition production, awarded in honor of the organization’s 30th anniversary.

The opening reception for Riddims of Graffiti will take place Thursday, May 14, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. An artist talk featuring Lindsay and the DVCAI curatorial team is scheduled for Saturday, May 16, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

All exhibition events will take place at the Monsignor William Barry Library located at 11300 NE 2nd Ave. in Miami. The exhibition will be accessible during the library’s spring and summer operating hours.

Organizers encourage guests to RSVP in advance.
