In an emotional session on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives last week, Congressman Jared Moskowitz (D-FL-23) delivered a heartfelt tribute to the life and legacy of Nancy Metayer, the late Vice Mayor of Coral Springs. Metayer, a prominent Haitian-American leader and environmental advocate, was killed earlier this month in an incident that has sparked national conversation regarding domestic violence.
According to reports by L’Union Suite, Metayer’s career was defined by breaking barriers. At 38 years old, she was the first Black woman and the first Haitian-American elected to the Coral Springs City Commission. At the time of her death, she was serving as Vice Mayor following her re-election in 2024.
Representative Moskowitz, whose district encompasses Coral Springs, honored a promise made during a community vigil to recognize Metayer on the House floor. Moskowitz secured a full five-minute speaking slot to ensure her impact was properly documented in the Congressional Record.
“While all of us in the Florida delegation could not help bring Nancy here as a member of this body, we can help make sure that her name and her legacy are honored,” Moskowitz stated.
The Congressman spoke to the deep void left by her passing, noting that “Nancy was beloved by everyone” and was a “rising star” whose career was cut short by a “senseless act of domestic violence.”
In a move to create a permanent memorial, Moskowitz announced the introduction of bipartisan legislation to rename a local post office in her honor.
“I will introduce legislation to name a post office in Nancy Metayer’s honor so that her life of service to South Florida will be permanently recognized by the people and the community she loved,” said Moskowitz.
The tribute has prompted a wave of reaction from the Haitian-American community. While many expressed gratitude for the recognition, others used the L’Union Suite platform to call for more substantive action against domestic abuse.
“Let’s not stop there,” one commenter wrote, suggesting the establishment of foundations and scholarships. Others urged lawmakers to move beyond memorializing buildings and focus on passing new bills to protect domestic violence victims or funding emergency shelters.
Metayer was not only a politician but a respected environmental scientist, serving as the Senior Equity Officer for ICLEI USA. Her influence extended to the national stage, where she led Caribbean community outreach for the 2024 presidential campaign. Colleagues noted that Metayer was just days away from announcing a bid for Congress when her life was cut short on April 1. Her husband has since been charged with her murder in what authorities described as a domestic violence incident.
As the South Florida community continues to mourn, the bipartisan effort to name a post office after Metayer stands as a testament to a leader who fought for equity and inclusion.
