Miami-Dade County leaders are taking steps to hold Amazon accountable after the company announced plans to close its South Dade distribution facility, a move expected to eliminate approximately 1,000 jobs.
The action, led by Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins and approved unanimously by the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners, seeks to enforce a prior agreement tied to the development of the site.
In 2020, Miami-Dade County conveyed public land to Amazon for the construction of a major distribution center, with the expectation that the project would generate long-term employment opportunities in South Dade. As part of that agreement, Amazon committed to creating and maintaining at least 325 full-time jobs.
However, the company announced in March that it plans to shut down the facility by July 2026, raising concerns among county officials about whether those commitments are being upheld.
“When it comes to the private, for-profit use of county land—the people’s land—promises made must be promises kept,” Cohen Higgins said in a statement. “Amazon made a binding commitment to create and maintain jobs in South Dade. I am simply requiring them to honor it.”
The approved resolution directs the county administration to take all necessary steps to enforce the Declaration of Restrictions associated with the property. That could include pursuing legal action if officials determine Amazon is in violation of the agreement.
It also instructs the County Attorney’s Office to work alongside the administration to ensure compliance and uphold the economic development goals tied to the original land conveyance.
County officials are required to provide a report within 30 days detailing the status of enforcement efforts, as well as any updated plans from Amazon regarding the facility and the impacted workforce.
The closure, if finalized, would mark a significant loss of jobs in South Dade and raises broader questions about public-private development agreements and long-term accountability.
