U.S. Representative Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-FL) has officially entered a plea of not guilty in federal court following a sweeping indictment that alleges she misappropriated millions of dollars in federal COVID-19 relief funds.
The South Florida congresswoman, who represents the 20th Congressional District, faces 15 federal counts, including conspiracy to commit wire fraud, theft of government funds, and money laundering. As first reported by Hy Lo News, the charges stem from a 2021 FEMA contract involving a healthcare company owned by her family. If convicted on all counts, Cherfilus-McCormick faces a statutory maximum of up to 53 years in federal prison.
Despite the severity of the charges, Cherfilus-McCormick has remained steadfast in her innocence.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Cherfilus-McCormick’s company, Trinity Healthcare Services, received a $5 million overpayment from FEMA due to a clerical error. Instead of returning the funds, federal prosecutors claim the congresswoman and her co-conspirators converted the money for personal and political gain.
Key allegations in the indictment include:
- Campaign Financing: Diverting stolen funds to her 2021 congressional campaign through “straw donors” to bypass federal limits. According to the Campaign Legal Center, “straw donors are when a donor makes political donations by directing its funds through another person or entity.”
- Personal Luxuries: Using government funds for personal purchases, including a 3-carat yellow diamond ring.
- Tax Evasion: Filing false tax returns that inflated business expenses and charitable contributions to reduce tax obligations.
As noted by WLRN, her attorney, William Barzee, entered the plea on her behalf while she remained in Washington, D.C. for congressional business. Barzee stated that the congresswoman is “eager to get back to work” and focused on representing her district.
In previous statements, Cherfilus-McCormick has dismissed the allegations as an “unjust, baseless sham,” maintaining that any financial discrepancies were the result of administrative errors rather than criminal intent.
While she continues her duties in Washington, the case has significant implications for South Florida’s political landscape.
