Inaugural Pepsi National Battle of the Bands Brings HBCU Culture and Community Investment to the Palm Beaches

The National Battle of the Bands (NBOTB) capped off Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend with its inaugural Palm Beaches event, bringing together HBCU marching band excellence, community service, and educational investment in a multi-day celebration rooted in culture and access.

Now in its 12th year, NBOTB expanded its footprint into South Florida for the first time, marking a milestone for the organization and the region. While the weekend culminated in a high-energy stadium showcase, organizers emphasized that the event was designed to extend beyond performance—prioritizing scholarships, community outreach, and student opportunity.

According to NBOTB, the organization awarded $300,000 in scholarships in 2026 alone, with each participating band receiving $50,000. The total investment brings NBOTB’s cumulative scholarship support to more than $2.4 million for HBCU marching band programs nationwide.

“This weekend reflected everything the National Battle of the Bands stands for,” said Derek Webber, executive producer and creator of NBOTB. “Service, culture, education, and opportunity came together powerfully, and the Palm Beaches embraced that mission.”

Service and Education at the Core

The weekend opened on Thursday, January 15, with the NBOTB CARES Initiative: Feeding the Community. In recognition of MLK Weekend, volunteers served seniors across four Palm Beach County senior living communities, highlighting the organization’s focus on service as a core pillar of its programming.

On Friday, January 16, activity shifted to Palm Beach State College’s Lake Worth campus, where the Emerging Experience Entrepreneurship Conference brought together professionals from finance, technology, entertainment, STEM, and business development. The free conference featured discussions on access to capital, innovation, and career pathways, including a panel presented by the Motion Picture Association.

That same day, more than 2,000 students attended the HBCU College & Career Fair, where they connected with college representatives and learned about scholarship and enrollment opportunities. Several students received on-site scholarship offers, including multiple awards to Livingstone College, reinforcing NBOTB’s emphasis on educational access.

Culture Takes Center Stage

Community celebrations continued Saturday, January 17, with a free Fan Experience outside Flagler Credit Union Stadium. The event featured live music, local vendors, and a Greek Stroll-Off Competition, alongside performances from South Florida student groups including the Palm Beach Lakes High School Marching Band and the Dillard High School Marching Band and Step Team.

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. from Florida Memorial University won the Greek Stroll-Off, earning the $5,000 grand prize.

Later that day, six HBCU marching bands took the field inside the stadium for what organizers called the first major HBCU band showcase of 2026. Participating schools included Bethune-Cookman University, Florida Memorial University, North Carolina A&T State University, Florida A&M University, South Carolina State University, and Southern University.

From precision drills to crowd-favorite arrangements, the showcase delivered a reminder of the cultural influence and discipline that HBCU band programs continue to bring to communities nationwide.

With its Palm Beaches debut, NBOTB signaled plans to further anchor HBCU culture, education, and service in South Florida—positioning the region as a growing hub for nationally recognized Black cultural events.
