More Than a Holiday: Why Alpha Phi Alpha Celebrates the Actual Birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

While the nation prepares for the federal observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day this coming Monday, members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. are already in formation. Today, January 15, marks the actual 97th birthday of their most famous “Brother,” and for the Alphas, this date is more than a footnote—it is a call to action.

Dr. King was initiated into the fraternity’s Sigma Chapter in 1952 while attending Boston University. Since then, the organization has made it a tradition to treat January 15 as a day of direct community engagement, separate from the broader celebrations of the Monday holiday.

The “Actual” Birthday vs. The Holiday

Though the federal holiday is observed on the third Monday of January to create a long weekend for service, the fraternity places deep historical weight on January 15. Across the country, chapters use this specific date to host “Brotherhood Breakfasts,” wreath-laying ceremonies, and “A Day On, Not a Day Off” service projects.

2026 Alpha Anniversary and Legacy

This year is particularly significant as the fraternity continues to spearhead efforts to maintain the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial in Washington, D.C.—a project the fraternity was instrumental in passing through Congress and funding with over $3 million in donations.

What to expect from Alpha Chapters today:

  • Voter Registration Drives: Honoring King’s fight for the Voting Rights Act.
  • Youth Mentorship: Chapters are hosting “Go-to-High-School, Go-to-College” workshops in local high schools.
  • Community Clean-ups: Direct service in under-resourced neighborhoods to embody the “Beloved Community.”

While the fraternity’s official Founders’ Day is December 4, January 15 has become a “second homecoming” for the Black Greek-letter community, centering on the values of leadership and advocacy that King exemplified.
