As January begins, attention turns to college readiness and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) — a vital academic and cultural pathway for many Black students in South Florida.
The season officially gets underway with events like HBCUCon, a three-day celebration and networking forum in Downtown Miami and Overtown that brings together alumni, recruiters, and prospective students for workshops, panels, and cultural experiences. The conference highlights college access and finance, activism and community building, and includes opportunities for mentorship and recruitment in a festive atmosphere.
Across South Florida, similar fairs and expos — including Black College Expo events and local high school HBCU information sessions — aim to connect students with scholarships, admissions officers, and support networks for first-generation college go-ers. According to WLRN, amid national debates continuing around diversity and inclusion in education, these fairs have taken on renewed importance as places for students to explore identity-affirming educational options.
For many families in Miami-Dade and Broward, HBCU college fair season is more than a recruitment cycle — it’s a community tradition that reinforces historical legacy and academic aspiration.
For 2026, Florida will host several HBCU college fairs, with key events including the National Battle of the Bands Fair in Lake Worth (Jan 16), the Miami Black College Expo in Miami (Jan 24), and the Suncoast Chapter HBCU Fair in St. Petersburg (Mar 28), offering onsite admissions, scholarships, and career info for high schoolers to explore opportunities at HBCUs.
For now, here’s a breakdown of confirmed events in January:
- National Battle of the Bands HBCU College & Career Fair: Friday, January 16, 2026, 9 AM – 1 PM at Palm Beach State College, Lake Worth Campus.
- Miami Black College Expo: Saturday, January 24, 2026, 10 AM – 2 PM at William H. Turner Technical Arts High School, Miami.
