Mark Bogen Elected Broward County Mayor; Robert McKinzie Tapped for Vice Mayor

Broward County will see familiar faces step into the top two commission roles, following the unanimous vote on November 18. According to NBC Miami, Mark Bogen was selected by his fellow county commissioners to serve his second non-consecutive term as Mayor. District 8 Commissioner Robert McKinzie was voted in as Vice Mayor.

Mark Bogen Returns as County Mayor
Mark Bogen will serve as Mayor of the Broward County Commission — his second, non-consecutive term in the role. Bogen represents District 2, which includes Coconut Creek, Margate, and parts of Coral Springs, Deerfield Beach, and Pompano Beach. He previously served as county mayor from November 2018 to November 2019.

Since joining the commission in 2015, Bogen has led several districtwide initiatives, including efforts to regulate rideshare companies, addressing longstanding issues at the Monarch Hill landfill, and expanding economic-development funding in his district.

One of his most widely noted reforms was eliminating the need for postage on absentee ballots in Broward County — a change intended to make voting easier and more accessible for residents. The Caribbean National Weekly cited Bogen’s “seasoned leadership” as a key factor in the unanimous vote to bring him back into the mayor’s seat.

Mayor Mark Bogen, who nominated McKinzie, highlighted his colleague’s experience and commitment to public service. “I’m proud to nominate Commissioner Robert McKinzie for vice mayor. He is well deserving of this honor…..He prides himself on empowering people and being a public servant, not a politician,” Bogen said during the meeting broadcast

Broward County Mayor Mark Bogen outlined initiatives aimed at addressing food insecurity and supporting the local business community. “Food insecurity and homelessness are so widespread in our county. People often ask, ‘What can I do to help feed somebody?’ Most say they’re busy or can’t afford it. That’s why I created the Bread Promise,” Bogen said.

The program allows individuals to provide a loaf of bread to homeless shelters or food pantries in Broward County for just $5, with 100% of donations going directly to the nonprofit Broward Partnership for the Homeless and the participating bakery. “I’m personally committing to 100 loaves a month, and the bakery will match it. This is a small step, but one person can make a difference,” he added.

Bogen also discussed plans to engage more with the business community. “I want to create the Broward Business Council, where commissioners can get input quarterly from new and existing businesses about how we can support them. This is one way to expand dialogue and strengthen our community,” he said.

Robert McKinzie Appointed New Vice Mayor, Mayor-in-Waiting

Local 10 News reported that commissioners also selected Robert McKinzie as Vice Mayor for the 2025–26 term — a role that traditionally rotates into the mayor’s seat the following year, positioning him as the likely county mayor in 2026.

After being sworn in, Vice Mayor McKinzie emphasized continuity and focus. “There’s no time for celebration. It’s time to continue the good work we’ve been doing. Let’s get to work,” he said, signaling a commitment to advancing ongoing initiatives in the county.

McKinzie represents District 8, a majority-minority district that includes large portions of Fort Lauderdale, Lauderhill, and Lauderdale Lakes.

A Fort Lauderdale native, McKinzie earned a B.S. in Business Administration from Bethune-Cookman University and spent more than 30 years working as a licensed general contractor. Before joining the County Commission, he served as a Fort Lauderdale city commissioner, according to Florida Politics

On the County Commission, McKinzie has prioritized housing, Port Everglades expansion, improvements at Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport, and economic-development initiatives across the county.

How This Leadership Rotation Impacts Broward

In Broward County, the mayoralty is not an executive position, as outlined in the
Broward County Commission Overview. Under the county charter, the mayor primarily serves as the presiding officer of the commission and as a public representative for the county.

The commission elects its Mayor and Vice Mayor annually on the third Tuesday in November, with the Vice Mayor typically ascending to the mayor’s role the following year.

The selection of Bogen and McKinzie signals a blend of continuity and emerging priorities. Bogen brings institutional knowledge and experience navigating the county through major growth-related challenges. McKinzie brings a background rooted in development, infrastructure, and representing historically underserved communities.

They will shape policy direction in one of Florida’s fastest-growing counties as Broward prepares for major decisions on housing, transportation, and economic development.
